For your first computer, the "new guy/gal" often gets the "boat anchor", the PC that's used to keep the attic storage door propped open. rantĪ couple of tips, trying to impress your new employer at this stage is a key to getting started in a positive way.

I'm not into them but it sure makes shopping at my favorite stores a royal PITA. My only reservation here is what Autodesk is going to do with the official "2020" versions hitting the market in 3-4 weeks and their purported support for Metal that they alluded to at WWDC, but I'm not holding my breath. If you insist on using a Mac, at least budget for two fast external drives for scratch and project disks (unless your new company requires you to use their LAN as the project "disk"). Since 2004, our Win PCs that use Autodesk and GIS apps have 3 drives - the main drive (OS/apps), the scratch disk (for both the relevant apps and the OS), and the project disk. We do use Macs with VectorWorks, and prefer Macs for use with Nemetschek products - offered only to indicate that my bias here is related to AutoCAD & LT.Īnother reason for using a Win PC - desktop or mobile - is that Win machines have dual or triple disk configurations. "Cost" of the Mac means nothing to me in this regard, IMO Macs are not optimal for AutoCAD or LT (and Revit). I will not approve a request for a Mac if AutoCAD or LT are the target app to be used.

The preferred GPU in our PCs is a Quadro - poring through Autodesk's recommended GPUs for their latest versions of LT and AutoCAD offer dozens of Quadro configurations, with only a few Radeon Pro or AMD variants. I suspect, but don't know, that Autodesk's support for AutoCAD apps stopped when - in late 2016 - Apple stopped supporting NVIDIA altogether.

My company has several Macs in service, none have AutoCAD apps installed due mostly to zero support options and no certified systems.

Autodesk does not support any of the GPUs/CPUs in any of the newer Macs (since 2016, mobile or desktop). It's impossible to get support for any AutoCAD Mac app newer than 2016.

Autodesk has not certified any version of AutoCAD - full or LT - since 2016. Honest opinion.Īs the owner, do not bring a Mac into the environment. Also an owner of a civil engineering firm. Longtime Mac user/Win user and longtime AutoCAD user.

  • Is there a heavily noticeable difference buffing the 5500 GPU to 8GB from 4GB?Ī lot of the people at work are using gaming laptops / PC’s for the power they provide, but I can’t stand the edgy gamer aesthetic, and I refuse to be seen walking around TAFE holding a 17inch Alienware gamers rise up neckbeard hotpocket warmer.Ĭheers for the feedback guys, it’s appreciated.

  • Would the i7 be enough? I plan to upgrade the GPU to the 5500 8GB model and maybe stretch the 16GB ram to 32GB.
  • I can run tests using my existing MacBook Pro but this post is mostly just to ask: I have an older 2017 MacBook Pro and it boot camp runs AutoCADLT pretty well, though I need to see how well it handles the larger files once we get back from the Xmas break. The business uses Windows for all their machines, but I am hoping to bypass this by using Bootcamp and the ethernet adaptor so I can jack into the network. Granted, I mostly work with AutoCADLT so I don’t need blazing amounts of power, but I would still like to future proof my mobile workstation so I don’t have to bug the finite dept very year. My initial plan was to use a Surface Book 2, but I worry about it getting a little long in the tooth. I managed to score a Civil draftperson apprenticeship recently and have been told the company will pay for a computer to use, and since I will be going to and from school I want to be able to take my workstation with me.
